You want to install window or exchange old for new? With a little manual skill, you can do it yourself. In just a few steps, we explain how to prepare the window installation, insert the windows and finally seal them professionally.

Those who install new windows benefit in more than one respect: additional light comes in, better ventilation is achieved and energy costs are reduced. A window replacement is often done quickly. Even if you want floor-to-ceiling windows or shutters, a lot of the work can be done on your own.

Can you install windows alone?

In principle, you can also install your windows on your own. To do this, however, you need some manual skill. However, it is better to work in pairs to avoid accidents. Also, keep in mind that replacing windows will likely require permits, especially if the new windows are larger than the old ones. An example of this would be floor-to-ceiling windows. An architect helps with the permits as well as with the planning of larger projects, such as a complete window front where you have to tear out an entire wall. Flirt with electric shutters, you may need to schedule an electrician.

What are the costs of installing windows?

The acquisition costs for windows start at around 100 dollars . For floor-to-ceiling windows you pay an average of 800 to 1,200 dollars . The most expensive are sliding windows. What do you need for the window installation?

If you want to install windows yourself, you will usually need the following materials in addition to the windows:

            • spacer wedges

            • spacer blocks

            • Level

            • OCF

            • Cutter

            • saws (jig saw, foxtail)

            • Silicone / acrylic as a sealant

Install window: Instructions in 5 steps

1. Install window: preparation

If there are old windows, first remove the window sash. You saw the old window frame in several places so that you can then knock out the frame parts with a hammer. If the window is a bit older, you can be available. You can knock these out with a hammer and chisel. Then remove all dowels. Clean the area and touch up any damage with repair mortar. When working, always remember to wear your safety glasses and work gloves.

2. Install window: check

So that you do not experience any nasty surprises when installing the window later, you should now check again whether the window opening is large enough for the new window. Control the length, width and depth. Plan to be about two centimetres the window, which you will later fill in with foam. Do not forget the height of the windowsill either. Install the window handles on the new window and remove the window sash.

3. Install window: insert

Remove the protective film from the areas that are difficult to reach later

Apply the sealing tape to the outside of the frame

Fix the window frame with spacer wedges and blocks

Check the position with a spirit level

Don't forget about the joint spacing and the window sill

Screw the window frame tightly to the wall

Hang in the window sash

Check the function of the window and that everything is secure

4. Install window: seal

Seal the construction joint with assembly foam

Note that the foam will still swell

Immediately remove excess foam from the frame

Let the mounting foam harden

Remove any excess mass with a cutter

Wedges and blocks are now superfluous and can be removed

Fill the holes created with mounting foam as well

5. Install window: Final work

How long does the window installation take?

The working time for installing windows depends not only on the type of window, but also on the condition of the wall and masonry. In addition, one should not underestimate the time that has to be invested in breaking out the old windows. If there are two of you and you work quickly, you can install a window in just two hours. On average it is more like three to four hours per window.
